The Central Saanich Fire Department has four full time employees and 40 volunteer members. The Fire Department office is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. A duty officer is on call after work hours to handle burning complaints, non emergency situations and fire related concerns. For assistance outside of working hours the Central Saanich Fire Department duty officer may be contacted by calling

Do I require a burning permit from May 1 to Oct 31?


May, June, July, August, September and October

All fires require a permit and are limited in size to no greater than 1 meter (3 feet) in diameter.

During these months authorized open air fires shall be located at least:

  • 7.5 meters (25 feet) from any property line.
  • 60 meters (200 feet) from any building or structure.
  • 60 meters (200 feet) from any standing timber or brush and be limited in size not greater than 1 meter (3 feet) in diameter, or as required for a bona fide agricultural purpose. "Bona Fide Agricultural Purpose" shall mean agricultural burning of crops, or stubble, or burning ordered for the purpose of fire safety, but excluding land clearing burning

Fires smaller than 3 feet in diameter do not require a permit

Fires over 3 feet in diameter do require a permit.

November 1 of one year to May 1 of the following year authorized open air fires shall be located at least:

  • 7.6 meters (25 feet) from any building, structure, wooden fence, combustible material or property line, and be limited in size not greater than 1 meter (3 feet) in diameter

What days can I burn on?

Burning is allowed 2 1/2 days per week from sunrise Thursday, Friday and Saturday till 12 noon. There is no burning on Statutory Holidays.


Do incinerators require a permit?


All authorized incinerators require a permit

and are subject to the same regulations as an open burn.

"Authorized Incinerator" shall mean any metal or masonry container, fitted with a metal screen or grill of 9.5 mm (3/8") mesh or less to restrict any sparks or flying debris and are permitted to be used in the District.

That the incinerator is located at least:

  • 1.5 meters (5 feet) from any shrubbery, wooden fence or other combustible material; and
  • 7.6 meters (25 feet) from any building.
