Benvenuto Avenue Restoration and Management Planning Study
Benvenuto Avenue is the main entrance to the well known tourist and heritage site of Butchart Gardens and is part of the appeal to visitors accessing the Gardens. The roadway was originally constructed in 1929 of 2.4m x 6m concrete panels which extend for 2.6km and serves millions of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians annually which visit both the Gardens and Gowlland Tod Provincial Park. The District‘s Official Community Plan (OCP) also recognizes Benvenuto Avenue as a “Proposed Heritage Road”.
The objective of this study is to review and build on the previous restoration and management plan for this roadway and evaluate the options for upgrading the roadway for modern traffic and pedestrian uses. The study will review the options for the restoration of the existing concrete panels, replacement of the panels with concrete or asphalt and construction of separated bike lanes and walking trails to accommodate modern traffic, all while keeping the “old road atmosphere” and character of the roadway.
