Snow and Ice Control Tips

Your patience and co-operation is appreciated when our snow/ice control program is in operation. The following snow information are tips to assist you:

Ensure you and your vehicle is properly equipped to deal with adverse winter weather conditions before the winter season begins.

Good quality winter snow tires and a well serviced vehicle are the first steps in dealing with winter driving conditions. Dress appropriately for winter weather and carry a proper emergency safety kit in your vehicle.

If possible, do not park your vehicle on the street or in your cul-de-sac

An empty street makes the passage of snow plows and salt spreaders much easier.

Do not try to stop the plow truck operators

The snow/ice routes are laid out and are under the direction of Roads Section Foreman. Please direct all requests, comments and concerns directly to the Public Works Department, Roads Section at 544-4224 ext 229. Normal working hours are 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday or the Municipal Hall at 250-652-4444.The department does have a standby service seven days a week to handle off hour's requests or problems. For Public Works emergencies after regular office hours, please call Central Saanich Police at 250-652-4441.

Walk on the left side of the road (facing traffic)

On roadways where there are no sidewalks or the sidewalks are impassable due to snow. Give the snow plow operators as much room as possible. Our drivers are aware of the surroundings, but the equipment is large and visibility can be difficult at times. Please do not attempt to wave down or step out in front of a salt truck or plow to get the driver’s attention.

Never shovel snow from driveways and sidewalks onto the road.

The snow plows always push the snow to the side of the road so the snow will be pushed back onto your driveway rather than plow it away. Pushing the snow from your driveway onto the road will add to the pack on the roads making a hazardous situation and increases danger.

Pile snow shovelled from your driveway on the left side of your driveway as you are facing your property

This minimizes the amount of snow on your driveway entrance after you have cleared it out.  The snow operators attempt to not leave snow in driveway’s whenever possible, but unfortunately it is challenging. This is not always possible following heavy snowfall.

Please shovel any catch basins if they are in front of your home

After a snow event when temperatures begin to rise will allow snow to melt and it will began to drain into the storm system and will reduce the chance of flooding and icing in the road. In turn will reduce the chance of flooding your own property.

Recycling and sanitation containers should not be placed on the road

Place beside the sidewalk or on the shoulder of the road and remove them once there are emptied. For more information, please call the Municipal Hall at 250-652-4444
