Park Project FAQs

What is special about this park project?

In keeping with the District’s commitment to environmental best practices and sustainability, the Centennial Park Tennis Court project was designed to minimize rainwater runoff entering the storm drain system. Special features of the site include: bioswales and a rainwater detention pond; extensive use of native species in landscaping; use of open grass areas and permeable surfaces for the spectator viewing area, parking and pedestrian paths.

This integrated system slows the passage of stormwater on the site, reducing runoff, promoting groundwater recharge, evaporation, improving the quality of water leaving the site and supporting native planting. The extent of landscaping and fencing incorporated along the park edges also serves to buffer neighbouring agricultural properties from recreational use.

What about site accessibility?

Barrier-free parking is adjacent to pathways leading to courts. A wheelchair accessible picnic table is available. There is easy access to courts and the spectator viewing area.

Why are the “corners” of the courts set at 45 degrees?

Balls hit into the corner deflect off more easily and roll toward the back of the court.

What is special about the lighting system?

The use of 1000-watt metal halide bulbs gives a true white light and bulbs have a long life expectancy of 12,000 hours. If the lights are on for an average of 3 hours per day, the bulbs will last for at least 10 years. The light fixtures are mounted on 12-meter high poles. This allows the light to be directed to the courts with very little “over splash” to surrounding areas. A coin operated timer controls when the light may be activated and revenue gained helps to offset operating costs.

What sport surfacing system was used?

The courts have been coated with a durable acrylic finish known as “Plexipave”. This sport surfacing system is quick drying and provides good traction and a consistent bounce. The court colour is “Australian Open True Blue” and the non-court areas are “Light Green”.

The “Green Monster”
It’s not Fenway but we have our own version of “The Green Monster”, in the form of a 10’ x 27’ practice wall. Magnesicore sheathing was mounted on a rigid metal frame to create a superior rebounding surface that encourages skill development for all ages and abilities.
