On June 20, 2011 Central Saanich Council endorsed, in principle, the recommendations of the Central Saanich Agricultural Area Plan. Council also directed Staff to proceed:

with an inventory of public lands in Central Saanich to identify suitable lands for community agriculture uses; and, |
|
• |
to prepare a Land Use Bylaw amendment for Council consideration to exempt deer fencing from height restrictions on farm land within the ALR. |
During the process of developing the Plan, Central Saanich Council took early action to advocate to the CRD for a regional response to issues that affect the viability of farming both in Central Saanich and neighbouring municipalities. The endorsement of the Agricultural Area Plan by Council is a milestone of completion for this project, but is also a starting point for future municipal efforts aimed at increasing the viability and productivity of our local farms. The next step is to appoint a temporary (one year) Central Saanich Agricultural Advisory Committee, commencing in the fall, to address and direct first priorities for bylaw and policy changes related to supporting agriculture.
