The Urban Containment Boundary is shown outlined in black below. It is in place to ensure development is focused in areas that make sense for the community. It helps protect and enhance the rural and small-town character of the community, which is a key principle of the newly adopted Official Community Plan.
It includes the Villages of Brentwood Bay and Saanichton, which are compact, walkable centres where the day-to-day commercial needs of the community are met; and the Keating Business District that includes a range of industrial and service oriented businesses that serve the broader region and provide diverse employment opportunities. The District will continue to protect the agricultural and rural landscape alongside compact villages and nearby residential neighbourhoods.
