The Central Saanich Fire Department now has the second highest fire insurance grading in the Capital Region; this is combined with the second lowest fire cost per capita in the region.
Those with commercial property (including multi-residential) insurance in Central Saanich may notice their insurance premiums drop anywhere from one to three per cent. The lesser premiums are the result of the Fire Department’s recent evaluation by Fire Underwriters Survey, a national organization that provides data to insurance companies. A detailed review of the department’s ability to suppress fires takes place every few years and includes analyzing historical response times, equipment, water supply, aid agreements with other municipalities, and more. The previous update was in 2013 after Station 1 was opened at 1512 Keating Cross Road. The investment in the new station saw the District’s grading upgraded as well.
The total estimated savings for all properties with commercial insurance is $80,000 annually, or $800,000 when estimated over a 10 year period. Residential property rates are not currently calculated based on the grading, but may be in the near future.
