Watch for new road markings and look out for others to help everyone get where they're going safely.
We are building a better-connected network for people getting around our community, guided by the Active Transportation Plan. This page explains how new road markings work and where you'll find them.
Did you know?
For safe passing distance, the Motor Vehicle Act requires a MINIMUM of 1 metre (~3 feet, about the length of a golf club) on roads with speed limits of 50 km/h or less and 1.5 metres (~5 feet, about the length of a hockey stick) on roads with speed limits of 51 km/h or more. This distance is from outside edge (like the end of a bike's handlebars) to outside edge (like a side-view mirror on a vehicle).

Sharrows
What it means: Chevron markings (known as "sharrows") show that cyclists and drivers share the lane where there isn't width for bike lanes.
What to do: Drivers, limit speed and give vulnerable road users as much space as possible (1 metre at the very minimum).
Where you'll find it: Along Wallace Drive (behind Stelly's Secondary School)

Green Pavement
What it means: Green paint highlights busy areas where cyclists and drivers cross paths.
What to do: Pay extra attention to other road users.
Where you'll find it: Along Mount Newton Cross Road (between Highway 17 and Lochside Drive)

Shared Pathway
What it means: This symbol shows that people walking, rolling, cycling and riding animals all share the path.
What to do: Control your speed, alert when passing, give plenty of space and yield to slower pathway users.
Where you'll find it: On the new multi-use pathway beside Mount Newton Cross Road (between Highway 17 and Lochside Drive)

Elephant's Feet
What it means: Dotted lines parallel to crosswalk markings mean cyclists do not need to dismount, like they do at a regular crosswalk.
What to do: Slow down and only cross when it's safe to do so. Drivers, watch for faster-moving bikes as well as pedestrians.
Where you'll find it: At the crosswalk at Mount Newton Cross Road and Lochside Drive
