The District of Central Saanich’s popular Meet Your Street program is back for a second year–the program provides funds to support neighbourhood events to build a stronger community. This year Central Saanich is looking for applications that bring neighbours together with a focus on emergency preparedness and fire safety.
The Meet Your Street grant program provides approximately $250 per event to support neighbourhood-focused events that foster connection between neighbours, strengthen community and prepare the community for emergencies. Events supported by the program can include neighbourhood block parties, outdoor movie nights, local scavenger hunts, presentations, live music, and much more.
“Feeling connected to your neighbours and community is such a vital ingredient for a healthy, fulfilling life and we’re delighted to be able to encourage that here in Central Saanich,” said Central Saanich Mayor Ryan Windsor. “Last year's program was a huge success, and we hope to continue with this year's focus on bringing neighbours together to learn about emergency preparedness and fire safety.”
“Knowing your neighbours and having a sense of connection to them can be crucial in times of need, whether you're in need of assistance or someone else needs yours,” said Lisa Banfield, Central Saanich’s Emergency Program Manager. “Applicants can reach out to us, and we can help your neighbourhood do things like create an emergency contact list, learn how to assemble an emergency kit or facilitate a FireSmart presentation.”
Anyone interested in applying for a grant to host an event can do so until September 1, with applications accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A total of eight grants are available. Applicants should allow four weeks for review and will be required to provide a short wrap-up summary within 15 days of the event.
