Peninsula & Area Agricultural Commission is an advisory committee whose mandate is to advise the Municipalities of Central Saanich, Metchosin, North Saanich, Saanich, Sidney and the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area on matters involving agriculture, and, to facilitate the development of programs for implementation of the Saanich Peninsula Agricultural Strategy objectives and keep the Municipalities advised of these programs.
The District of Central Saanich 2024-2027 Strategic Plan includes a priority to “Cultivate a Resilient Economy and Thriving Agricultural Sector”, and a goal to “support the agricultural community and encourage farming that improves food security.” The District’s Strategic Implementation Plan has identified an update to Central Saanich’s Agricultural Area Plan in 2026, which is a strategy for a community's farm area designed to identify opportunities to strengthen farming.
Recently Central Saanich Council advised staff to review the possibility of withdrawing from the Peninsula & Area Agricultural Commission to focus on district-specific agricultural activities, and hearing from District farmers; however Council wants to reach out to the agricultural community by taking a survey before making any decisions. Results from this survey will be presented to Council in September.
