The District of Central Saanich, located on the Saanich Peninsula of Southern Vancouver Island enjoys the reputation of being among the best locations in Canada to work, live and play. These postings are for the 2026 Central Saanich Municipal Election. They include two Advance Voting Days on October 7th and 14th, 2025, General Voting Day on October 17th, plus applicable training time.

JOB OVERVIEWS
ELECTION OFFICIAL
The Election Official (EO) assists and supports the administration of voting at an assigned voting place on General Voting Day and the Advance Voting Days (as applicable). The Election Official works in teams of two, report to the Presiding Election Official and Alternate Presiding Election Official for their voting place and ensures voters participate efficiently and effectively in the voting process.
ASSISTANT PRESIDING ELECTION OFFICIAL
The Assistant Presiding Election Officer (APEO) is responsible for assisting the Presiding Election Official (PEO) with the administration and conduct of voting at an assigned voting place. In the PEO’s absence the APEO assumes the duties and responsibilities of the PEO.
PRESIDING ELECTION OFFICIAL
The Presiding Election Official (PEO) is responsible for the administration and conduct of voting at an assigned voting place and the supervision of election officials at the voting place on General Voting Day and the Advance Voting Days (as applicable). The PEO ensures that the voting place is safe and accessible, voting procedures are followed correctly, and issues related to voters and candidate representatives are managed and successfully resolved.
The ideal candidates will possess:
• Knowledge of and experience with the election process and the election provisions of the Local Government Act;
• Excellent customer service, verbal and written communication skills;
• Proficient computer skills;
• Ability to interact with voters and clearly communicate election procedures;
• Ability to understand and follow written instructions and checklists;
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Be legally entitled to work in Canada; and,
• Not be affiliated with any candidate running for office in this general election.
• For PEO and APEO, the ability to supervise and direct others.
Expectations for each role
• Must attend mandatory training session(s)
• Must be able to work on General Voting Day from approximately 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. or until duties are fulfilled – overtime rates apply for hours over 8 hours per day
• Availability on one or both Advance Voting Days is an asset but not required
• For PEOs and APEOs, must visit assigned voting location prior to voting day or prior to location being open to the public and must be able to pick up and drop off election supplies at election headquarters on General Voting Day

The 2026 hourly pay rate for these casual, temporary roles are marked on each job description below and are based on BC's Living Wage for 2025. Overtime rates will apply as appropriate.

Election Official
(Casual)
Hourly Rate of Pay: $27.40

General Accountability:
The Election Official (EO) assists and supports the administration of voting at an assigned voting place on General Voting Day and the Advance Voting Days (as applicable). The Election Official works in teams of two, report to the Presiding Election Official and Alternate Presiding Election Official for their voting place and ensures voters participate efficiently and effectively in the voting process.
Expectations
• Must attend mandatory training session
• Must be able to work on General Voting Day
• Availability for one or both Advance Voting Days is an asset but not required.
• Hours are approximately 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. or until duties are fulfilled – overtime rates apply for hours over 8 hours per day
Nature and Scope of Work
• Assists in setting up the voting location and stations including laptops, voting booths and posting signs and notices.
• Verifies voter’s name on the electronic voters list, making changes to existing registration, registering new voters and verifying identification.
• Explains the voting process and issues ballots.
• Assists voters as may be required.
• Assists with the packing of equipment and supplies and the closing of the voting place.
• Follows all applicable policies and processes
• Performs other related duties as required
• Ability to promote and contribute to a positive team environment.
Requirements
The successful candidate will possess:
• Excellent customer service, verbal and written communication skills;
• Proficient computer skills;
• The ability to interact with voters and clearly communicate election procedures;

The Assistant Presiding Election Officer (APEO) is responsible for assisting the Presiding Election Official (PEO) with the administration and conduct of voting at an assigned voting place. In the PEO’s absence the APEO assumes the duties and responsibilities of the PEO.

• Must attend mandatory training session(s)
• Must visit assigned voting location prior to voting day or prior to location being open to the public
• Must be able to work on General Voting Day and/or Advance Voting Day(s) from approximately 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. or until duties are fulfilled – overtime rates apply for hours over 8 hours per day; and,
• Must be able to pick up and drop off election supplies at election headquarters on General voting day in place of the Presiding Election Official, if required.
Nature and Scope of Work
• Assists the Presiding Election Official with the setup of the voting place, including the vote tabulator, laptops, ballot box and all other equipment and supplies.
• Performs opening checks on the vote tabulator.
• Ensures the integrity of the voting place including perimeter checks for political signs placed in proximity to the voting place and monitoring the use of cell phones.
• Verifies voters’ eligibility to vote.
• Supervises electronic voter registration.
• Assists voters as may be required through the voting process.
• Closes the vote tabulator.
• Supervises the packing of equipment and supplies and the closing of the voting place.
• Assists the PEO in other duties as required.
• Following all applicable policies and processes
• Performing other related duties as required

• Sets up assigned voting place prior to the location being open to the public on general voting day ensuring set up is efficient and effective.
• Picks up equipment and supplies from election headquarters (District’s Municipal Hall) on general voting day.
• Supervises the setup of the voting place, including the vote tabulator, laptops, ballot box and all other equipment and supplies.
• Operates the vote tabulator.
• Takes any required declarations.
• Supervises election officials providing support, scheduling breaks etc.
• Supervises electronic voter registration.
• Assists voters as may be required through the voting process.
• Maintains contact with and reporting election results to election headquarters.
• Manages the packing of equipment and supplies and the closing of the voting place.
• Delivers the equipment and supplies to election headquarters at the close of voting.
• Follows all applicable policies and processes
• Performs other related duties as required
