As we look to the 2020/2021 burning season, residents will be able to apply for a permit online as of October 1 at csaanich.ca/burning.
The proposed regulations for the season are:
- The ability to burn seven days a week between October 16 and May 15 when the Venting Index forecast is "Fair" or "Good".
- The requirement for permit holders to extinguish a fire if smoke is causing a nuisance to neighbors.
- An exemption for open burning when authorized by the Fire Chief to reduce fuel build-up or decrease Fire Danger.
*There will no longer be the ability to burn on Fridays regardless of air quality; the Venting Index now applies on all days of the week.
The enforcement policy will focus on education first: staff will take the approach of compliance through education versus enforcement. Municipal Ticket Information will be served on persons for three or more offences within the past 24 months, and second offences for anyone observed burning prohibited materials.
Council is scheduled to adopt the new regulations on September 28, 2020.
