Fruit trees to take root at Tanner Park for Tree Appreciation Day

Community planting event will help grow tree canopy for future generations

Central Saanich is celebrating Tree Appreciation Day with a free community planting event at Tanner Park on Saturday, September 26.

Residents of all ages are invited to help plant a feature shade tree beside the park’s picnic area and a dozen ornamental fruit trees near the playground.

Fruit will be available in future for community members to harvest, while surplus could be donated through volunteer picking programs such as the LifeCycles Project Society.

This community event begins at 11 a.m. and runs until planting is complete. Participants are asked to bring gardening gloves and a shovel or trowel. Central Saanich staff will lead planting and provide refreshments, materials and tree information.
The planting project is funded through a BC Hydro Community Regreening Grant.

National Forest Week takes place September 20 to 26, 2026. Last year, more than 300 students took part in Central Saanich's Tree Appreciation Day, helping plant a mini forest of trees and shrubs at Brentwood Elementary School.
