Regular yard maintenance is essential to reducing wildfire risk to your home and property, which is why Central Saanich is offering residents a way to remove their branches and shrubs safely.
On June 17, Central Saanich will host their first chipping drop-off and community BBQ event. Residents are welcome to bring their branches and shrub trimmings to the Volunteer Fire Museum, located at 1901 Mount Newton Cross Road.
“Burning yard waste is now banned in Central Saanich, so this is a great opportunity to get rid of dry debri from your property. Come down with the family and enjoy some food and refreshments at the BBQ with Ember the FireSmart Fox, see some cool old fire trucks in the museum and chat about the FireSmart program and take away some tips,” says Central Saanich’s FireSmart Coordinator, Ryan Vantreight. “Vegetation management is one of FireSmart’s key methods proven to reduce the risk of losses. Removing yard waste near your home will provide a better opportunity for firefighters to defend your home during the threat of a wildfire.”
In addition to hosting community events and offering public education, Vantreight is performing free home ignition risk assessments for Central Saanich residents to get a personalized and confidential idea of how they can reduce their risk to wildfire.
“I encourage those who think it might benefit their property to get in touch as soon as possible so they can take advantage of the resources available to them right now. The best time to FireSmart your property is before the fire happens.”
