The Districts of North Saanich and Central Saanich, and the Town of Sidney are joining together to honour residential school Survivors, their families and communities, and to remember the Indigenous children who never returned home on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
As part of this commitment, the three municipalities have partnered with Star Cinema to present a series of Indigenous film screenings from September 25 to October 1, 2026. Through the power of storytelling, the films offer opportunities to learn about Indigenous histories, cultures, experiences, and perspectives while encouraging meaningful reflection and dialogue.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, observed annually on September 30, honours the children who never returned home from residential schools, as well as Survivors, their families, and communities. The day also serves as a reminder of the ongoing impacts of residential schools and the importance of learning the truth of Canada's history as part of the reconciliation process.
"Reconciliation begins with understanding," said the municipalities in a joint statement. "We invite residents to participate in these screenings as an opportunity to learn, reflect, and deepen their understanding of the experiences of Indigenous Peoples. By listening to Indigenous voices and stories, we can all play a role in advancing reconciliation."
Residents are encouraged to wear orange on September 30 in recognition of Orange Shirt Day and to take part in community events and activities that support learning and reflection.
