Car-share Now Available in Central Saanich

Starting June 1, Central Saanich resident and businesses will have access to three carshare vehicles operated by Modo. Modo’s carshare service is an alternative, or addition, to private vehicle ownership.

Through this partnership with Modo, the District of Central Saanich now has three carshare vehicles. Two vehicles will be located in Saanichton Village—one of which will be electric — and the third in Brentwood Bay near the Old West Saanich Schoolhouse. The District hopes to see a fourth vehicle added in Brentwood by June 2020.

“Adding these vehicles aligns perfectly with our purpose to connect people with places in a way that’s affordable, convenient, inclusive and sustainable,” said Patrick Nangle, CEO at Modo. “With Modo already serving thousands of residents in Sidney and Greater Victoria, Central Saanich provides a natural extension for members seeking an alternative to the rising costs of car ownership.”

“We know that Central Saanich’s primary contributor to greenhouse gas emissions is from vehicles, and carsharing is a terrific way to see fewer vehicles on the road,” said Central Saanich Mayor Ryan Windsor, who noted the district has provided a revenue guarantee to Modo to help establish the service in the community.

The shared cars are ideal for those who don’t own a vehicle or a household that needs an extra one on occasion. Rates include gas, insurance, maintenance and parking privileges and start at just $4 per hour.

Modo has 700 cars, trucks, SUVs, minivans across Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and Okanagan. It offers members all the conveniences of owning a car, without all the costs and hassle. To drive with Modo, members must join the co-operative by way of a one-time share purchase or a monthly fee. Members receive a fob for access, and then simply book the vehicles online, on their Smartphone or by calling. Cars are picked up and returned to the same location, and may be booked up to a year in advance. The minimum booking duration is 30 minutes and the maximum is 10 days.
