Central Saanich eyes energy improvement opportunities with commercial buildings

Property managers can now get free guidance to support energy improvements and save money

Property managers of commercial buildings in Central Saanich are now eligible to join the Greater Victoria 2030 District—a free program designed to help reduce the energy use and greenhouse gas emissions of commercial buildings by 50 per cent by 2030.

The 2030 Districts Network provides access to technical support, education, annual benchmarking and more. The goal is to share expertise that can help property managers reduce energy use and emissions, save their property money, and compete in a competitive leasing market. Relatively easy actions, like optimizing HVAC operations and replacing lighting with LEDs, can have a big impact.

Locally, 48 buildings in the region are taking part already. This includes buildings managed by Jawl Properties, Townline Properties, City of Victoria, and the Capital Regional District.

“Participating in the 2030 Districts Network means commercial properties will be ahead of the curve—ready for upcoming regulations and making their buildings climate resilient,” said Cora Hallsworth, Director of the Greater Victoria 2030 District, who notes that the program’s name reflects global emission reduction targets for the year 2030.

Property managers for Central Saanich buildings can get access to a free expert session and chat with participating property managers by joining an upcoming member meeting:

Date: Thursday, February 20
Time: 9:30 a.m.
Location: Online
Registration: Property managers and owners can email corahallsworth@2030districts.org

“We’re aiming to reduce the burden on property managers by connecting them with expertise about what has worked elsewhere for buildings like theirs,” said Central Saanich Mayor Ryan Windsor.

“In Central Saanich, commercial buildings are our second highest source of emissions, after transportation. Commercial buildings impact our community’s climate goals, which is why we are supporting this initiative to help make improvements easier and more cost-effective.”
