A new piece of public art was installed at Centennial Park this morning as part of Central Saanich’s 75th anniversary.
An upright paddle designed by Tsartlip (W̱JOȽEȽP) artist Chazz Elliott and fabricated in steel by Saanichton-based Pacific Coast Metalcraft. In W̱SÁNEĆ tradition, a paddle raised upright with the handle facing down signifies peaceful intention when arriving in another territory, as Chazz Elliott explains; and signals respect, connection and a desire for positive relationship. From top to bottom within the paddle are designs of water, orca, wolf, raven and tree, which are physical representations of the water, land and sky, and examples of community, working together, ingenuity and balance.
“This installation is a meaningful symbol of welcome in a key location of our community that sees many visitors,” said Mayor Ryan Windsor. “It reflects our ongoing commitment to building respectful relationships with W̱SÁNEĆ Nations and to moving forward together in a spirit of understanding and peace.”
The District first commissioned the paddle artwork in 2021 as part of its broader reconciliation efforts, recognizing the importance of creating visible, lasting symbols that acknowledge the history, presence and culture of the W̱SÁNEĆ people.
Located at one of the community’s most visited parks, the installation is intended to greet residents and visitors alike, offering a moment to reflect on the shared stewardship of the land and the importance of respectful relationships.
“The paddle represents not only where we have come from, but how we choose to move forward,” said Elliott. “It is about arriving in a good way.”
The District’s 75th anniversary celebration marks a milestone in Central Saanich’s history while recognizing the thousands of years of history that came before through respectful relations with W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip) and SȾÁUTW̱ (Tsawout) First Nations.
