The District of Central Saanich invites you to step back in time to 1905 when the Newman family built their farmhouse in Saanichton.
Newman Farm, now a public park owned by Central Saanich, has been restored much to its original state over the past 20 years thanks to several grants. For the first time, the farmhouse’s interior has been staged and will offer a rare glimpse of life on the farm through the 20th century.
"We have staged the interior of the farmhouse to help tell the story of how the Newmans lived, which is something of local folklore,” says Sonia Nicholson, a local archivist, who led the work and was assisted by community volunteers.
The 16.5-acre farm was donated as public parkland to the District Central Saanich by John and Henry Newman in 2003. Having remained in family ownership and relatively unchanged for over 100 years, this property is a rare example of a small, subsistence farm.
Pack a picnic and step back in time at Newman Farm in Saanichton during open houses on August 19 and 26, 2023, noon to 3:00 p.m.
