Mosquito management update

The last two weeks, the CRD, the District of Central Saanich and Tsawout First Nation have received reports of increased mosquito presence in the area. In response to the current conditions, staff from CRD, Central Saanich and Tsawout First Nation have met in the field with our contractor to explore short term solutions to supplement the ongoing abatement work.

The contractor advises the current hatch of mosquitoes is likely from high tides and excess accumulation of salt water two to three weeks ago. It is likely that as crops in the region are harvested, these mosquitoes have dispersed to new areas causing an increased presence. The contractor is continuing to apply VectoBac in the treatment areas, and we are making immediate drainage improvements.

While it is not our intention to completely eradicate local mosquito populations, we understand that mosquitoes greatly impact residents and visitors to the region and we are taking steps with our partners to address the issue. It is a collective effort of government, land owners and residents to follow best practices on mosquito control. For further information on what residents can do to reduce the risk, find tips here.
