Central Saanich Police and Fire Services urge everyone to prioritize safety this Halloween

As Halloween approaches, Central Saanich Police and Fire Services are reminding residents to keep safety top of mind for a fun and incident-free evening.

Trick-or-Treating Tips:

  • Plan ahead: Stick to well-lit, familiar routes.
  • Cross safely: Use crosswalks and look both ways.
  • Stay visible: Use reflective gear or glow sticks. Have a flashlight with you.
  • Stay together: Young children should be accompanied by an adult.

Reflective slap bands are available at the Municipal Hall and Police Station (1903 Mt Newton Road) to help kids stay visible.

Central Saanich Police will be actively patrolling neighbourhoods and monitoring speeds. Drivers are urged to slow down and watch for children.

Fire Safety Reminders:

  • Fireworks: Permits are required. Be mindful of animals and neighbours.
  • Fires: Recreational fires must be under 0.5m x 0.5m. Permits are needed for larger burns.
  • Costumes & décor: Choose flame-resistant materials and use battery-powered lights in pumpkins.

Community Bonfire & Fireworks
Join us at Centennial Park for the annual bonfire and fireworks in honour of AC Forrest Owens.

  • Bonfire starts at 7:30 p.m.
  • Fireworks display honouring AC Forrest Owens at 8:00 p.m.
  • Treats: hot chocolate, hot dogs and popcorn provided by The Central Saanich Lions Club.

QUOTES

Central Saanich Police Service’s Chief Constable Ian Lawson

“A safe Halloween is a happy Halloween. By staying alert and looking out for one another, we can make sure it’s a fun night for all.”

Central Saanich Acting Fire Chief Stacey Lee

“We encourage families to think about fire safety when decorating and celebrating.  LED lights are encouraged as an alternative to candles and flammable materials should be kept away from heat sources. Be cautious of or avoid long, flowing costumes that can catch fire.”
