Mount Newton Pathway project advances with community feedback

Central Saanich moves forward with detailed design for new multi-use pathway

A new pathway to walk, roll and cycle along Mount Newton Cross Road is one step closer to becoming a reality. On Monday, February 23, Council voted to move forward with detailed design for a multi-use pathway between Highway 17 and East Saanich Road.

The decision follows public engagement weighing three design concepts. Community input showed strong support for the project overall and consistent preference for a concept that places the new pathway on the south side of the road, reducing highway crossing points and conflicts near Saanich Peninsula Hospital. This design features a grass boulevard separating the pathway from vehicles for a kilometre, then a painted buffer. The concept is also supported by the Tsawout First Nation Chief & Council and Saanich Peninsula Accessibility Advisory Committee.

Following the Council vote, next steps are a detailed design and cost estimate. Detailed design will explore key themes from community input, like the potential for physical barriers to make the pathway safer and more comfortable to use. The project will also inform future intersection improvements at Central Saanich Road and East Saanich Road.

The first phase of the Mount Newton Pathway, connecting Lochside Drive with the Lochside Regional Trail, was completed in 2025. Crews could break ground on this second phase as early as 2027 or 2028.
