Free event offers practical summer strategies for residents of all ages
As the summer approaches, the District of Central Saanich is offering a free lunch-and-learn to help residents prepare for hot, dry weather and higher wildfire risk.
Anyone can suffer from heat illness, and we know it can be life-threatening. Fortunately, there are steps we can take right now to protect ourselves from extreme heat, smoke exposure and wildfire risk.
Participants will learn FireSmart strategies for outside their home and practical tips to identify a cool zone indoors, stock key supplies and create a buddy system to check in with neighbours, friends or family who live alone or may be at higher risk.
Banfield, who will lead the event alongside Central Saanich’s Wildfire Mitigation Specialist, Ryan Vantreight, says anyone who lives in the area is invited to register—particularly those at higher risk of heat illness, including older adults, outdoor workers and people with certain health conditions. The event is also geared towards residents who are pregnant or responsible for caring for babies, young children and older adults.
This free lunch-and-learn will take place on Wednesday, May 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Centre for Active Living 50+ at 1229 Clarke Road in Brentwood Bay. Complimentary BC Transit fares will be available for participants. Registration is required by calling 250-652-4611.
The event is offered in partnership with Beacon Community Services and the Centre for Active Living 50+.
