Central Saanich invites residents to serve as Paid On Call firefighters

The Central Saanich Fire Department is encouraging residents to apply to become paid on-call firefighters. Paid-on-call firefighters are trained responders who live in the community and respond when available, working alongside career firefighters. In 2025, the department responded to approximately 1,500 calls for service, including medical, fire, rescue and other emergencies.

Successful recruits will take part in a comprehensive training program to become fully certified firefighters and will serve alongside a dedicated team of career and paid-on-call members.

“This role offers meaningful personal and professional growth—from problemsolving under pressure to stronger communication and teamwork,” said Stacey Lee, Fire Chief for the Central Saanich Fire Department. “Residents from many walks of life can be a strong fit for the position—along with a willingness to work closely with others and keep learning.”

The department has a roster of 45 firefighters, including six career staff; training takes place every Monday night from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

“It’s demanding, but incredibly rewarding—the teamwork and support are strong, and serving your own community makes the commitment worthwhile,” said Paid-OnCall Lieutenant Greg Michell.

The department is hosting a no-obligation information session August 10, at 6:00 p.m., at Central Saanich Fire Station 1 at 1512 Keating Cross Road. Attendees will learn about the role, training, time commitment, and recruitment process, with time set aside for questions. Family members and partners are encouraged to attend.

Previous firefighting experience is not required. Applicants must be residents of Central Saanich.

More information is available at CSaanich.ca/POCfire and in person at Fire Station 1 on Keating Cross Road.
