Public Notice is hereby given that Advance Elector Registration for 

Town of Sidney Resident and Non-Resident Electors will be accepted 

at Sidney Municipal Hall until August 25, 2026. 

 

After the advance voter registration deadlines, voter registration will only be accepted on voting days.

 

VOTER QUALIFICATIONS

Resident Electors:

  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day (Saturday, October 17, 2026); 

  • a Canadian citizen; 

  • a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration;

  • a resident of the municipality; and

  • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law. 

 

Non-Resident Property Electors (persons who own property in the municipality but do not reside in the municipality) 

  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day (Saturday, October 17, 2026); 

  • a Canadian citizen; 

  • a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; 

  • a registered owner of real property in the municipality for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration;

  • the only persons who are registered owners of the property, either as joint tenants or tenants in common, are individuals who are not holding the property in trust for a corporation or another trust; 

  • not entitled to register as a resident elector of the municipality; 

  • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law; and 

  • if there is more than one registered owner of the property, only one of those individuals may, with the written consent of the majority of the owners, register as a non-resident property elector.

VOTER REGISTRATION

Resident Electors and Non-Resident Property Electors who are not on the list of registered electors and who have not registered in advance may register on voting days.  

 

Resident electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) to prove both residency and identity.

 

Non-Resident Property Electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) to prove identity, proof they are entitled to register in relation to the property, and, if there is more than one owner of the property, written consent from the other property owners. This consent must be provided at time of registration. (Forms are available at the respective Municipal Halls and websites).

 

The following are examples of acceptable identification:  BC Driver’s Licence, BC Identification Card, a document certifying registration under the Indian Act, a citizenship or membership card issued by a First Nation, a citizenship card issued by Metis Nation BC, BC Care Card, utility bill (water, electrical gas), Social Insurance Card, Citizenship Card, Owner’s Certificate of Insurance and Vehicle Licence issued by ICBC, Property Taxation Notice, Credit Card or Debit Card issued by a bank.

 

VOTE BY MAIL

All qualified electors may vote by mail ballot. Please complete an application form, available at the respective Municipal Halls and websites, and return it to the municipality by Friday, October 16, 2026.  Mail ballot packages will be sent out commencing on or about the last week of September 2026.  Important: To be counted, your mail ballot must be received by the Chief Election Officer of your Municipality no later than 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the location directed in your mail ballot package instructions. 

 

LIST OF REGISTERED VOTERS

Beginning Tuesday, September 1, 2026, until the close of the general voting for the election on October 17, 2026, a copy of the list of registered electors will be available for public inspection at the Municipal Halls during regular office hours, excluding statutory holidays. Before inspecting the list, a person must sign a statement that they will not inspect the list, make copies, or use the information included in the list except for the purposes of Part 3 – Electors and Elections of the Local Government Act. An elector may request their address or other personal information about them be omitted from or obscured on the list of electors. The elector must contact the Chief Election Officer to make this request.

 

OBJECTION TO REGISTRATION OF AN ELECTOR

An objection to the registration of a person whose name appears on the list of registered electors may be made in accordance with the Local Government Act until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026. An objection must be in writing and an objection may only be made by a person entitled to be registered as an elector of the municipality and only on the basis that a person whose name appears on the list of electors has died or is not qualified to be registered as an elector of the municipality.
