The District of Central Saanich is inviting the community to help shape direction as it redevelops municipal facilities. Central Saanich is seeking input on a comprehensive plan to best use District lands to not only replace municipal buildings at the end of their useful lives, but to use this opportunity to create new housing, services and/or amenities.
The District’s Municipal Hall, Police Station and Fire Station 2 are currently located on the largest property in Saanichton Village’s core. The District is moving municipal operation to a new site on Hovey Road and reimagining the current site at 1903 Mt Newton Cross Rd in the heart of the village. The current building was built in 1965, to serve a population of 5,000; today, Central Saanich’s population is more than 18,000, and municipal, police and fire services have expanded.
A new building would be designed to be accessible, customer-service oriented, energy efficient, meet post-seismic standards, and integrate spaces for community use. The District will be working to determine how recreation facilities could potentially be included at the Hovey Road site given this site’s proximity to Centennial Park and the need for more public recreation space on the Peninsula.
How You Can Get Involved
The three-phased engagement process will include in-person and virtual opportunities. It kicks off this summer and fall with ideas and input from the community, in early 2025 there will be a presentation of concepts and financial models for community feedback, and an elector approval process is likely to take place later in 2025.
The public is invited to open houses from July to September.
