The District of Central Saanich is hosting an open house where the District and local service agencies will have displays and information about local initiatives to improve the lives of older adults and those of all ages with disabilities, differing abilities and accessibility needs.
The District will be sharing a draft of its Age-Friendly Community Plan. The District is also launching the development of an Accessibility Plan, and this will be the first opportunity for community members to meet the project team and learn about the project. Panorama Recreation, Beacon Community Services and the Centre for Active Living will have information booths to help connect individuals with programs and services that may be a benefit to them.
“With our growing population of older adults, the District is working with local partners to create an age-friendly plan that will help us ensure people know about and can access the resources they need to continue living independent, active lives, and being involved in the community,” said Central Saanich Mayor Ryan Windsor.
“We are also creating our first plan to improve accessibility in Central Saanich,” noted Windsor. “We want to learn about the experiences and priorities of community members with differing accessibility needs, and hope they will take this opportunity to talk to the staff and consultants as we launch this work, as well.”
The Open House takes place Thursday, July 27, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at The Centre for Active Living (formerly the Senior Centre), 1229 Clarke Road in Brentwood Bay. There will be a variety of ways to participate, including talking to staff, filling out a survey, drawing ideas, and gathering information from the information booths. A team member who is fluent in American Sign Language will be on site to accept feedback from ASL users as well.
