Central Saanich working to improve accessibility of Council meetings

The District of Central Saanich is working to make participation in Council meetings more inclusive and welcoming for all residents.

Thanks to a grant from SPARC BC, the District has introduced loop and headphone hearing assistance devices to support individuals who are hard of hearing. These devices are now available at all Council meetings, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to fully engage in local government discussions.

In addition to the hearing technology, closed captioning is now also provided during meetings on a large screen in the room as well as for those viewing from home, offering real-time text of spoken content for attendees and viewers. The Council Chambers has also been updated with reserved accessible seating, ensuring that individuals with mobility challenges have comfortable and convenient access to participate in civic life.

“These improvements reflect our ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion,” said Mayor Ryan Windsor. “We want every resident to feel empowered to engage with their local government, and these enhancements are an important step toward that goal.”

The District encourages residents to attend Council meetings in person or watch online.
