Community film screening on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to increase awareness of history and legacy of residential schools

On September 30, two community screenings of the Canadian film, Bones of Crows, will provide an opportunity for members of the public to learn about the impacts of Canada’s residential school system. The film, which will be played at Star Cinema, follows the life of a Cree woman as she survives a childhood in the residential school system.

The screening is being sponsored by the municipalities of Central Saanich, North Saanich, and Sidney along with Star Cinema. Admission will be by donation with all donations going to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society. The film is approximately two hours long and will play at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation became a statutory holiday in 2021 to honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Learning about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is considered a vital component of the reconciliation process.

The municipalities of Central Saanich, North Saanich, and Sidney are also sponsoring the South Island Powwow at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria on September 30. All are welcome to attend the event, which features Indigenous cultural performances.
