Central Saanich to upgrade Saanichton water main and improve road safety

Water main project includes crosswalk with flashing beacons, continued bike lanes and accessibility improvements for bus stop

Road work is anticipated to start Monday, March 10, for the Saanichton Water Main Replacement.

The project replaces a section of aging water main and brings road safety improvements to the neighbourhood, with anticipated completion by this fall. Work will be on Wallace Drive between Blossom Park and Lisnoe Avenue.

This work incorporates road safety improvements reflecting community feedback and priorities of the District’s Active Transportation Plan. Community requests include safer walking and rolling, more age-friendly transit options, and improved cycling connectivity between Brentwood and Saanichton. Critical underground infrastructure work offers a cost-effective opportunity to improve safety for all road users, where physical space and budget permit.

Road safety improvements planned for this project include:

  • Crosswalk with flashing beacons at Cultra Avenue
  • Painting for continued bikes lanes on Wallace Drive
  • Bus stop accessibility improvements
  • Sidewalk between Cultra Avenue and Lisnoe Avenue, budget permitting
  • Improved sightlines for all road users

These improvements aim to help connect the dots between existing infrastructure and make it easier for people of different ages to walk, roll, bike, drive and take the bus.

The speed limit will be reduced to 30 km/hour while this is an active construction site. Construction crews anticipate single lane alternating traffic on this section of Wallace Drive during major road work.
