Further Drainage Improvements for Maber Flats

Central Saanich continues to resolve drainage issues at Maber Flats, which has a history of flooding during the winter months. The District is assessing a new drainage system with culverts and controls to enhance agricultural use in the area.

The improvements will help to re-establish natural conditions and will attenuate flows into Graham Creek to enhance fisheries habitat. The proposed drainage system will also preserve the area as a waterfowl habitat.

The plan also includes the possibility of re-establishing native plantings and traditional use along the north property line, and building a bird viewing platform with educational signage.

The District purchased an 11 hectare parcel of Maber Flats in 2015 to improve drainage in the area, and has seen improvements since enabling better flows from Maber Flats in Graham Creek, which runs beside the area.  The proposed 2018 drainage enhancements are consistent with a 2009 Integrated Stormwater Management Plan that focuses on environmental enhancements in the area.

The District will continue to engage stakeholders and will monitor the flows in and out of Maber Flats and look for further improvements to ensure stormwater is effectively managed in this watershed.
