Fire Prevention & Safety

Fire Prevention Week: Charge smart and stay safe
Fire Prevention Week runs October 4–10. This year's theme focuses on everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.
Lithium-ion batteries power many devices, including phones, laptops, e-bikes, e-scooters and power tools.

Help keep your home and family safe by following these tips:

  • Use the charger supplied with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
  • Replace damaged, frayed or worn charging cords.
  • Charge devices on a hard, flat surface away from beds, couches and other materials that can trap heat.
  • Keep charging areas clear and allow air to circulate around devices.
  • Unplug devices when they are fully charged and avoid charging overnight when possible.
  • Take extra care when charging larger devices such as e-bikes, e-scooters and power tools. Charge them outside when possible.
  • Stop using a battery or device immediately if it becomes hot, swells, leaks, smells unusual, produces smoke or makes popping or hissing sounds.
  • Register for Saanich Peninsula Alert and keep your contact information current so you can receive important emergency notifications.

Safe charging habits matter during Fire Prevention Week and throughout the year. Charge smart. Stay safe.
